How to update your voter registration information
Voter Eligibility
Any person may register to vote in the town of his or her residence who, on Election Day:
- Is a citizen of the United States;
- Is a resident of the state of Vermont (and a resident of the town in which you apply to be added to the checklist);
- Has taken, or has previously taken, the Voter’s Oath (formerly called the “Freeman’s Oath”); and
- Is 18 years of age or more.
Any person meeting the requirements above who will be 18 on or before the date of a general election may register and vote in the primary election immediately preceding that general election. 17 V.S.A. § 2121
Deadline
There is no deadline to register, you may register to vote up to and including the day of the election.
First Time Registering by Mail
If you are registering to vote in Vermont for the first time by mail, you must include a photocopy of an acceptable form of ID. Acceptable forms of ID are:
- Valid photo ID (driver’s license or passport)
- Current utility bill
- Current bank statement
- Another government document
Military and Overseas Voter Registration
If you are a military or overseas voter your voter registration application must include the town and the legal address, or a location description of the last place you resided in Vermont immediately before joining the military or moving overseas. If you did not reside in Vermont immediately before joining the military or moving overseas, you cannot register to vote in Vermont. You must register to vote in the state and county or town in which you resided immediately before joining the military or moving overseas.
